Tonwell St Mary's is a Voluntary Controlled school in the Diocese of St Albans for children between the ages of 3 and 11.
Children are admitted to school in the September of the school year in which they become 5, but can join our nursery class when they are 3 years old.
Our main catchment areas are Tonwell, Hertford and Ware, although we do have children who come from much further afield to enjoy the many advantages our school has to offer.
History and Local Environment
Tonwell St. Mary’s was built in 1858 and now incorporates the building of St. Mary’s Chapel. The refurbishment of the redundant chapel provides two classrooms.
The original school, with its beautiful leaded windows and vaulted roof, is still used as our school hall. Later additions to the school have been designed to complement the existing edifice, giving the school a unique character and charm.
Our school is within the parish of Bengeo and enjoys close links with Holy Trinity Church. We attend the church for services while the Vicar and members of the church regularly visit school to lead our worship.
We benefit from having extensive outdoor space, a nature area and woodland. We are a 'Forest School' with all yeargroups enjoying outdoor learning every week.
